A Free-Range Historian?

You might be thinking, Wait, isn’t “free-range” what I see on the most expensive eggs at the grocery store? What does that have to do with history? And what in the world is a consulting curator?

Well I’m glad you asked.

For over 10 years, I’ve worked in a variety of historical institutions, museums, and archaeological sites around Western Pennsylvania and the world. I’ve dabbled in history from the dawn of human civilization to the Civil War, from Roman mosaics to Art Deco pottery, and everything in between. The joy of a public history professional is the astonishing variety of stories we encounter each day. In my career, I’ve sought out new challenges and new areas to research, rather than specialize in a particular time or place. Thus, The Free-Range Historian was born.

Many of those challenges have brought me outside the traditional museum walls and into the communities of Western Pennsylvania, my home. I see a need to bring professional-quality museum services to smaller institutions, businesses, and individuals. Starting with an exhibit for a small manufacturing company five years ago, my consulting business has grown as more projects come to the fore, including standing up an international company’s first archives as well as writing about my hometown’s football hero in a peer-reviewed history magazine. Each experience has taught me something new and re-affirmed my desire to tell our region’s story through objects, archives, and publications.
